The highlight of the sporting and cultural calendar is the Sree Narayana Jayanthi Boat Race (popularly known as Kumarakom Boat Race) held on Vembanad Lake during Onam (August/September). Over 1,000 oarsmen participate under various categories in snake boats but the loudest cheers and grand prize are reserved for the spectacular Iruttukuthi in which about 50 oarsmen row at a time.
