Ellora Caves

The highlight of the famous complex of caves is undoubtedly Cave 16’s Kailasa Temple, the largest monolithic cave monument in the world. The Ellora Caves hold within them seventeen Hindu, twelve Buddhist and five Jain temples and monasteries, all carved from a 2km-long escarpment.

The Aurangabad Caves are the city’s unsung heroes. Carved into the hillside near Bibi ka Maqbara, most of these twelve caves are viharas – dwellings for Buddhist monks. They are believed to have been created between the 2nd and 6th centuries AD, and are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Bibi Ka Maqbara

Modelled on the magnificent Taj Mahal, this tomb was built by Aurangzeb’s son Azam Shah in 1649 for his mother Rabia-ul-Duarani. The Mughal architecture is worth marvelling at, and the surrounding gardens and waterways offer opportunities for quietude.
