Taj Mahua Kothi, A Taj Safari Lodge - Bandhavgarh National Park

Mahua Kothi, A Taj Safari - Bandhavgarh National Park

Mahua Kothi or homestead is named after the Mahua tree which is prized and revered in the region. 12 standalone luxury cottages blend into a 45 acre private forest on the periphery of the national park. The guest area overlooks a large grassland where monkeys and birds in vivid colours are a regular feature. The mud cottages or ‘Kutiyas’ are built in the local style of architecture. A bean shaped pool screened by a bamboo thicket and shaded by Mahua trees is perfect for cooling off at midday. The guest areas are housed in a large brick building with deep verandas overlooking a grassland ringed by a forest patch. The dining hall has a large fireplace to keep guests warm during chilly winter evenings. Guests delight in picking fresh vegetables and fruit from the lodge’s private organic gardens for a salad. A select menu of treatments offered by professional in-house masseurs is the perfect indulgence to top off a safari holiday.

Mahua Kothi March 2019
From the moment we arrived Mahua Kothi felt like returning home. This was our second visit in 18 months, and we chose to return for the relaxing atmosphere, quality of food, quality of staff, naturalists - and perfect lodgings. While I had a focus on the daily safaris, my wife enjoyed the option of either going on safari, or sleeping in, getting an amazing breakfast and reading. The naturalists and safaris themselves where amazing. I would imagine that they would still be enjoyable without a tiger sighting. But I can only imagine, as on each trip I was lucky enough to have quality, lengthy, up close sightings. On my first safari we splurged on an all day safari. We entered the park 30 minutes before other vehicles. Within 20 minutes we heard alarm calls from spotted dear, then the roar of a tiger. Our naturalist was driving on this safari, and he sped off to where the roar was coming from. Within a kilometre we came face to face with an adult female tiger. The first thing I noticed was the hairs on my body react to this breathtaking encounter. The tiger, Dotty, was slowly walking towards our jeep - and we had to reverse on a number of occasions to give her room to keep walking - we witnessed behaviour such as growling and spraying as she walked up the track, before she decided she had given us enough and went back in the jungle. I had 14 sightings on my week at Mahua Kothi, but none will compare to the first - because it was my first. A leopard and wild elephants where other highlights on Safari. Every meal and snack at Mahua Kothi were delightful, every staff member, naturalist and the management are perfect and strive to meet every need, and always deliver. If you want to see tigers, do not go anywhere else, if you want to relax and enjoy perfect accommodation and food, do not go anywhere else. Thank you!

Amazing stay
Staying at Mahua Kothi was a great experience. Everything was perfect during our entire stay. Would like to thank Mr. Amit and the entire team for making our stay a memorable one. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. A special thanks to the Chef for delicious food. Harsh, our naturalist, made safaris more meaningful by sharing wonderful facts about the wildlife in Bhandhavgarh.
