Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary
This sanctuary, on the banks of the placid Lake Vembanad, attracts migratory birds like the Siberian crane, teal, osprey and marsh harrier, as well as storks and ibises in winter months. A morning bird safari offers the best chances of great sightings.

Syrian Orthodox Kottayam Cheriapally Church
This church, also called St. Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Church has a unique façade with an intriguing mix of Portuguese, Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist and Christian elements. Believed to have been built in the 16th century, the church today houses a beautiful four hundred-year old painting amongst other attractions.

Thazhathangady Juma Masjid
Said to be over a thousand years old, this mosque, on the banks of the Meenachil River outside Kottayam, is known for its architecture and carvings. Although the mosque open to public access only at certain times, it is still worth marvelling at from the outside.

Cruise down the backwaters at sunset
No trip to Kumarakom is ever complete without admiring the spectacular sunsets from a local canoe. Start with a tour of the backwaters before stopping to wait for the dramatic dipping of the sun, with the gorgeous Chinese fishing nets in the background.
