A hand-painted or block-printed Kalamkari painting makes a great take-home from Vijayawada. This craft is centred in nearby Machilipatnam, and evolved under the patronage of the Mughals and the Golconda sultanate. Each true Kalamkari painting involves seventeen steps, and uses only organic dyes.

Marvel at the statue of Lord Vishnu carved out of a single granite block in the four-storey sandstone temple at the Undavalli Caves. The temple was supposedly carved out of the hillside by Buddhist monks in the 2nd or 3rd century AD, and then used for Hindu worship in the 7th century.
