Volunteering is seeped into the Taj culture having transpired from the Tata value of giving back to the community. Yearly, over 7000 associates invest their time in mentoring and guiding youngsters, cleaning the local neighbourhood, taking up activities in the areas of hygiene and sanitation, local education, and support the preservation and promotion of local art and culture. Additionally, our volunteers collaborate with associates from Tata companies during Tata Volunteering Week, an initiative started by our Chairman, Cyrus Mistry, to further drive employee volunteering in the Tata Group.
Giving Back to the Destination
One of our ardent volunteers, Derek Monteiro, the Guest Relations Manager at the Vivanta by Taj – Holiday Village, Goa, has been instrumental in providing guests with unique experiences from the locales of Goa. His passion in understanding and developing the Goan way of life and bringing it to the bigger stage leads him to organize guest visits to remote villages. He frequently engages with villagers to provide them an additional source of income as tour guides and also learns from them to implement sustainable tourism practices.
Keeping our Environs Clean
The volunteers of Vivanta by Taj - Dal View, Srinagar have undertaken the responsibility of keeping the route to the Tulip garden and the lake clean and well maintained. Similarly, associates of Vivanta by Taj – M G Road, Bangalore have joined the ‘Adopt the Mile Bengaluru’ initiative; whereby every week volunteers from the hotel clean the surrounding areas of the hotel as well as repave the roads, paint the footpath and the walls that need enhancement.
Teaching a New Skill
To teach a new skillset to the young girls looked after by NGO, Ons Plek, the volunteers of Taj Cape Town conducted a baking workshop. The girls were taught to make cupcakes, muffins and were also shown fancy ways to decorate the pasteries. The volunteers helped the girls bake lovely pink colour cupcakes as part of this workshop.
Collaborating to Give Back
For Tata Group’s employee volunteering endeavor, Tata Volunteering Week, associates from Taj Mumbai Hotels and Corporate Office joined hands with the volunteers from Tata Starbucks, Trent, Tata Consulting Engineers and Tata Teleservices to spread awareness on hygiene and cleanliness. Close to 100 volunteers conducted a flash mob at one of Mumbai’s busiest train stations, Churchgate. Through song and dance, the team of passionate and enthusiastic volunteers spread the message of the importance of maintaining a clean and green environ.
