Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces - Milestones

1899

Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces started its operations as the Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) on what was to become a pioneering hospitality venture


1903

The company opens its first hotel, The Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai, India


1970

The company takes over the management of Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur and Rambagh Palace, Jaipur. These were the firsts in a series of attempts at the preservation of former royal residences in India – helping honor and celebrate the princely lifestyle, preserve traditional arts and crafts, ensure the livelihoods of artisans and making Rajasthan a hotspot in global travel destinations


1972

The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai opens a new wing; the Tower wing and increases its capacity to 560 rooms


1974

Fort Aguada, Goa the company’s first five-star deluxe beach resort is established in Goa. The ‘hippie paradise’ transforms into a legitimate tourist destination with its development. In the same year, the company extended its presence in metropolises with Taj Coromandel in Chennai


1979

Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces forays into Africa with the launch of Taj Pamodzi, Lusaka, Zambia 


1980

The company opens its first hotel outside India, the Taj Sheba Hotel in Sana'a, Yemen 


1982

The St. James’ Court in London further extends the Taj’s international footprint


1982

The Taj Palace, New Delhi is opened for the Asian Games


1983

The Aguada Hermitage is built in Goa as a retreat for all Commonwealth heads of government. These included former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher


1987

Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces creates another destination for tourism with the launch of what is currently known as Vivanta by Taj – Malabar, Cochin; The company’s first foray into Kerala along with the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC). This was a landmark moment in promoting Kerala as a tourist destination, and eventually led to its current characterization as ‘God’s own country’


 


1998

Set right at the tip of the azure waters of the Indian Ocean, Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces strengthens its presence in Sri Lanka with Taj Exotica in Bentota


2000

The company establishes Taj GVK Hotels and Resorts Limited with the GVK group to operate three hotels in Hyderabad


2001

Taj Exotica Resort and Spa is launched in Maldives, a first in this chain of exclusive retreats 


2004

Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces launches Taj Wellington Mews Luxury Residences, Mumbai 


2005

  • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces makes its first foray into New York with a management contract to operate The Pierre in New York, USA

  • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces also embarks on creating another signature landmark with its restoration of one of the largest private residences in the world, the historic Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur


2006

In another first, Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces unveil a new offering – Taj Safaris, in Mahua Kothi, Bandhavgarh. Impeccable service, attention to individual needs and sumptuous luxury amidst the primeval settings of an Indian national park made for an experience in adventure unlike any in the country so far


2007

  • The company acquires the iconic Ritz-Carlton in Boston, USA, which is later renamed as the Taj Boston. Another acquisition in San Francisco led to the launch of the Taj Campton Place.

  • Taj Safaris launched its second wildlife lodge at Baghvan, Pench


2008

  • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces launches its full service upscale hospitality brand, The Gateway Hotels and Resorts

  • Quilon, the South Indian restaurant at Taj's flagship property in the United Kingdom, Taj 51 Buckingham Gate Suites and Residences receives the ultimate culinary accolade - a Michelin star, the first for Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces 

  • The same year saw Taj hotels and the Tashi group join hands to create the new benchmark for premium hotels in Bhutan – Taj Tashi, Bhutan


2010

  • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces announces the opening of Taj Cape Town, a new luxury hotel in the historic city of Cape Town

  • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces launches a new brand – Vivanta by Taj – in the upper upscale segment

  • The Credit Suisse Research Institute chose the Indian Hotels Company Limited as one of its 27 ‘Great Brands of Tomorrow’

  • The restoration work on the Falaknuma Palace was completed and the most exclusive address in Hyderabad was opened to guests in November

  • Taj celebrated the reopening of The Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai after the terrorist attacks of 2008, following 18 months of restoration work


2011

  • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces forays into Srinagar, Kashmir, with a management contract for a hotel named Vivanta by Taj – Dal View, Srinagar with SAIFCO Hill Crest Hotels Pvt. Ltd.

  • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces announces the opening of The Gateway Hotel Airport Garden Colombo, the first international Gateway hotel

  • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces launches an epic book, The Taj at Apollo Bunder, showcasing the inspiring 108-year history of the flagship, The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai 


2012

  • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces announces the opening of Vivanta by Taj – Madikeri, Coorg

  • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces launches a free two-year hospitality trade training programme for youth from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families

  • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces announces the opening of Vivanta by Taj – Begumpet, Hyderabad; Taj’s first Vivanta hotel in Hyderabad

  • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces announces the opening of a Vivanta by Taj - Bekal, Kerala; a brand new signature in hospitality


2014

  • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces announces the opening of a new hotel, Vivanta by Taj – Rebak Island, Langkawi; Taj’s first foray into Malaysia

  • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces announces the opening of a new hotel, The Gateway Resort Damdama Lake, Gurgaon; The first Gateway Resort

  • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces announces the opening of a new hotel, Vivanta by Taj – Dwarka, New Delhi

  • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces completes a $10 million expansion and doubles its capacity at Taj Samudra, Colombo

  • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces launches the Performance.Art campaign

  • Indian Hotels Company Limited appoints Rakesh Sarna as the new managing director and chief executive officer

  • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces launches complimentary Wi-Fi access across its hotels globally – becomes the first Indian hotel group in the country to provide free Wi-Fi


2015

  • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces announces significant enhancements to its award-winning program, Taj InnerCircle

  • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces announces the opening of a new hotel, Taj Dubai

  • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces announces the opening of a new hotel, Vivanta by Taj – Guwahati, Assam; Taj’s first foray in the North East of India


 


2016

Divested 1.245 of stake in Belmond group (earlier known as Orient Express). Also divested the stake in Taj Boston for US $ 125 million.


Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur voted Best Hotel in the World at the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards


Taj Safaris forays into Nepal with its first international safari lodge, Meghauli Serai


Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces announces the opening of a new hotel, The Gateway Hotel Pushkar Bypass Ajmer


Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces unveils ‘Tajness’


Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces and Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts form an industry first alliance, ‘Warmer Welcomes’


2017

Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces announces the opening of a new hotel, Taj Swarna Amritsar


IHCL restructures its brand architecture. The 101 Taj hotels across 64 destinations move to single branded house identity – Taj Hotels Palaces Resorts Safaris and align with the Tajness philosophy.
