EXPLORE COLOMBO

Sri Lanka is a land of legends. Believed to be the home of Ravana from the Indian epic, Ramayana, the sandbanks of Adam’s Bridge reputedly once linked this island nation to India. Sri Lanka’s largest city, Colombo, reflects this legacy, offering a great mix of the past and the present.

Head out for a stroll through the Viharamahadevi Park, pick up textiles and books from Barefoot, and unwind at Galle Face Green.

Bandaranaike International Airport just outside Colombo is the country’s primary international airport. The airport operates flights to Asia and the rest of the world.

As Sri Lanka is an island, it has no rail connections to other countries. Colombo’s Fort Railway Station is a major rail hub for Sri Lanka. Trains connect Colombo with all major towns, but first-class carriages, air conditioning and dining cars are available on only a few.

The Sri Lanka Central Transport Board operates bus services to most parts of the island country. Long distance buses depart from the Pettah Central Bus Depot, with buses to the coast leaving approximately every half-hour.

Sri Lanka has an extensive network of roads, and the drives, especially along the coast, are scenic. Colombo has good road links to the rest of the country.
