Vivanta by Taj - Connemara, Chennai presents 'Earth' rooms this World Environment Day Together towards a better planet!
Taj Hotels, Resorts & Palaces has always been committed to giving back to community in which it operates and to help improve the quality of life by preserving the natural environment. The Earth Rooms at Vivanta by Taj-Connemara, Chennai is just one conscious step in this direction.
In keeping with the hotel's 'vintage cool' persona infused by the effervescent Vivanta brand of service, Vivanta by Taj - Connemara, Chennai has five Earth Rooms spread across different categories with the primary focus on making accommodation less taxing on the environment. Small but significant changes have been made that go a long way to make these rooms more eco-friendly and also help guests become more conscious about the environment.
Efficiency is the key
Starting from the beautifully-handmade natural wooden logo on the door, there is a keen sense of clever design to maximise usage with minimum wastage. The lighting, for instance, is provided by not just eco-friendly energy-efficient CFL, but the illumination is intelligently planned to cut down wastage through excessive lumen. These rooms allow a lot of natural light in, making it convenient to use artificial lighting only when necessary. The air-conditioning is set at 24 degrees, two degrees higher than the usual setting to keep the room comfortably-cool but low-enough to reduce significant amount of power consumption spent on the central air-conditioning system.
The minibar, which draws significant power for refrigeration, has been removed from these rooms, though guests can order for specific items by dialing the in-room dining services. The bath and bed linen is changed on alternate days, thereby reducing the usage of laundry chemicals. Stationery like writing pads, envelopes, etc can be brought to the room on request, to help reduce the wastage of paper.
To encourage commitment to greener environment, the hotel offers loyalists, who choose to stay at Earth Rooms, an added 15 percent Taj InnerCircle points. According to Vijay Shrikent, General Manager, Vivanta by Taj - Connemara, Chennai, "The concept of an Earth Room is to introduce environmentally-friendly measures, without compromising on in-room guest experiences and our signature hospitality. Mumbai, September 30, 2012: The next full moon in August ushers in an auspicious and special occasion in the Chinese calendar – The August Moon Festival. To commemorate this festive occasion, Golden Dragon – Mumbai’s first authentic Sichaun restaurant, at The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai has planned the August Moon Festival, from 30th September to 14th October 2012.
At the festival, tickle your taste buds with starters such as Beancurd five spice pepper salt, Shredded potato, konjee naro sauce or even Crispy orange chicken and spicy Chinese red chili. Indulge in the choicest of dimsums including Rice paper roll with mix vegetables & mayonnaise and Quail egg dimsum. Whet your appetite some more with mouthwatering soups such as Bean curd and asparagus soup and Lemongrass scented seafood soup. According to the Chinese legend, the moon is at its brightest and roundest on this day, and children try and spot the Moon Maiden to make their wishes come true. While steamed vegetable wonton and vegetable spring roll will continue to entice dim-sum lovers, skilful touches of newness can be seen in the Imperial Vegetable dim-sum, a delicate balance of flavour with the exotic vegetable mix and Chew Jao dim-sum which experiments with tofu and cashew nut as the stuffing.
For sheer dim-sum pleasures for non-vegetarians, Prawn and Crab Meat Seaweed Roll is a must for seafood lovers, while the spicy Steamed Fish Balls with Sacha Sauce are sure to ignite with its spicy notes. The spread also includes the all-time favourites like Fried Prawn Dumpling, Spicy Lamb Dumpling and Sichuan Chicken Roll.

The Vegetarian section of the main course has been adorned with many new exotic vegetables like Beijing style Taro, Kohlrabi and Snow peas adding variety and flavour. Chef Ho Chun Kee (William), the Master Chef at Golden Dragon is a celebrated chef who specialises in Oriental delights. The menu at the Golden Dragon features preparations which are unique to his expertise as well as known preparations which have his unique touch. Having extensively travelled across China and Asia, Chef Ho is a master of his Art.
A Hong Kong national, Chef William comes with over 40 years of experience, specialising in Cantonese, Sichuan and Hunan cuisine. He has worked on numerous assignments in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, and several parts of Mainland China like Chew Jao, Shanghai and Beijing. In his first assignment with Taj in 1994, he took care of Tea House of the August Moon for close to four years. Play to raise funds for Tata Medical Center - Kolkata
‘OMG – the lesser known side of Gandhi‘ is a treasure of private conversations, letters and thoughts of a man who remained at the center of every controversy, exasperated every leader and yet led a nation to freedom. This exciting play, inspired from Gandhi’s archived journals, will be staged on 27th April, 2012 at The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai to support the expansion of Tata Medical Center, a comprehensive Cancer Care Center from the Tata Group at Kolkata.
Researched and conceptualized by Mrs. Geeta Gopalakrishnan – Donor Relationships Director of the Tata Medical Center, the play stars veteran actor Dalip Tahil as Gandhi and Seema Anand, a well-known story teller narrating anecdotes. Mrs. Geeta Gopalakrishnan, Director Donor Relationships of the Tata Medical Centersaid, “Though Mahatma Gandhi’s image is largely confined to posters in government offices, archives reveal a very contemporary side.” The performance on 27th April, 2012 in aid of Tata Medical Center is important as majority of the cancer patients registered in India come from the Eastern and North – Eastern parts of the country. It was Mr. Ratan Tata’s vision to provide world class cancer treatment to the underprivileged. It would be wonderful if Mumbaikars support this noble cause as the existing facilities at the hospital are not sufficient to deal with the influx of cancer patients from Eastern India.”
Tata Medical Center (TMC) was formed to provide world class cancer care to the patients from Eastern and North-Eastern regions in India that sees higher registered cases of cancer. TMC is working towards offering a spectrum of services including prevention, diagnosis, therapy and rehabilitation of the cancer patients. The proceeds from the play will contribute towards the expansion of the center’s hospital in Kolkata to treat underprivileged cancer patients in East and North East India.Hide

"Sushi simply is a Japanese dish made of vinegared rice combined with other ingredients which is usually seafood or vegetables. It can be made in several different ways, each one having a name and a distinctive characteristic. It is the visual appeal and a truly distinctive taste that makes this dish so popular worldwide," says Juancho.
Some of the popular types of sushi that Chef will help you roll include nigirizushi (where a topping, generally raw or cooked fish or shellfish, is placed on a finger of vinegared rice smeared with wasabi paste), makizushi (where a filling of fish or vegetables is enclosed by vinegared rice, and wrapped in toasted nori seaweed), gunkanmaki (where a finger of vinegared rice is surrounded by a strip of nori, so that toppings, generally fish roe, can be placed on top without falling off - the end result is said to resemble a battleship) and temakizushi (where a small amount of sushi rice is spread on a square of nori, fillings placed on top, and the whole thing rolled into a cone shape). "Temakizushi is a popular choice for dinner parties, as guests can make their own," adds Juancho.

In September 1838 a storm blows up on the Indian Ocean and the Ibis, a ship carrying a consignment of convicts and indentured labourers from Calcutta to Mauritius, is caught up in the whirlwind. When the seas settle, five men have disappeared-two lascars, two convicts and one of the passengers. Did the same storm upend the fortunes of those aboard the Anahita, an opium carrier heading towards Canton? And what fate befell those aboard the Redruth, a sturdy two-masted brig heading East out of Cornwall? Was it the storm that altered their course or were the destinies of these passengers at the mercy of even more powerful forces?
On the grand scale of an historical epic, River of Smoke follows its storm-tossed characters to the crowded harbours of China. There, despite efforts of the emperor to stop them, ships from Europe and India exchange their cargoes of opium for boxes of tea, silk, porcelain and silver. Among them are Bahram Modi, a wealthy Bombay merchant, his estranged half-Chinese son Ah Fatt, the orphaned amateur botanist Paulette and a motley collection of others in pursuit of romance, riches and a legendary rare flower. All struggle to cope with their losses-and, for some, unimaginable freedoms-in the alleys and crowded waterways of nineteenth-century Canton.
As transporting and mesmerizing as an opiate induced dream, River of Smoke, the second book in Amitav Ghosh's Ibis Trilogy, will be heralded as a masterpiece of twenty-first century literature.

The Walk conducted by the Naturalist Consultant Vijay Thiruvady takes one along a variety of heritage trees such as an ancient Peepal tree, a Cluster Fig tree, Sheesham, Gulmohur and Jamun trees, amidst tranquil water-bodies, fringed by tall palms and four grand 120-year-old Cycads. A century-old tamarind tree offers sprawling shade to diners on the patio near the swimming pool. The Nature Walk also takes guests through the two well preserved century old buildings within the premises. The walk ends in a relaxed setting to enjoy coffee, tea and freshly baked cookies.Hide
