About Bentota

This sparsely populated beach is located in the Galle district, 62 Km south of Colombo. It is a well-developed town with several hotels, railway station, post office, shopping arcade and a cafeteria, surrounded by swaying palm trees. Bentota also has an open-air theatre where folk and mask dancing performances are staged regularly. Bentota has many delightful resorts and is ideally located for those wishing to visit other resorts along the 130 km long golden coastline.

At Bentota, you can take a safari at the Yala Wild Life Park, enjoy various water sports, explore the coral reefs in a glass boat, visit historical sights and release three-day-old turtle hatchlings into the sea.

Location & Attractions



Ambalangoda and Hikkaduwa are two popular tourist spots near Bentota. Ambalangoda is the home of devil dancing and mask making and is a half-hour drive from Bentota. Hikkaduwa, located 98 Km south of Colombo is best known for its spectacular Coral Gardens. Tourists can explore this underwater wonder world by sailing in a glass-bottomed boat or using goggles and flippers.



Beruwela, 56 km from Colombo, marks the beginning of a 130 Km-long stretch of golden beach. The warm, sunny weather and crystal clear waters of the bay make it a sunbathers’ and swimmers paradise.




Mount Lavinya beach, is located 12 Km south of the city and lies alongside a wind-swept headland jutting into the waters of the Indian Ocean.

Festivals

The year is punctuated by colourful festivals, of which the most spectacular is the Perahera at Kandy in August.
